Surrounded by farm land but with a reasonable well vegetated creek running through, the town looked pretty limited in terms of birding potential. Few if any species are as emblematic of the Neotropics as Ramphastidae, the family that includes the toucans, toucanets, and aracaris. On the trip to Costa Rica that I just returned from I was pleased to see both of those species as well as Black-mandibled Toucan and Keel-billed Toucan. Yeah, it was a heck of a trip.

The raising of the bins took place along roads through semi-shaded coffee farms and on the grounds of Villa San Ignacio , a hotel with big old wonderful trees and regenerating forest. But, they still occur, the most common species being Black Vulture , Turkey Vulture , Gray Hawk , Short-tailed Hawk , and Yellow-headed and Crested Caracaras.

This is a protected area that includes the Los Cusingos Bird refuge, where we were guided by Andres Chinchilla, a young man who as a child ran around the farm where his family worked, and was to become this incredible bird refuge. His years of experience in this area were quite obvious as we found 62 species in one morning.

The Fernbird , now in the family Megaluridae, is everything you’d expect from an Old World Warbler, brown, nondescript, and very skulky. The race found on the tiny Snares Islands ( Bowdleria punctata caudata ) may also represent a separate species. The Grey Warbler is a representative of the mostly Australian family Acanthizidae.
