I have 10,000 Birds contributor Adam Riley to thank for telling me I had to add it to my list, and a quick bit of research showed that he was right on. Longclaws are African members of the pipit and wagtail family, and unlike the rest of the family they have gorgeously-coloured throats. A terrible shot of Barrow’s Korhaan.

Of course, no visit to the East Pond would be complete without at least one attack by a Peregrine Falcon , just to make everything flush and force you to start scanning over again.

I’m happy to say that Laura Erickson and Marie Read have written a book, Into the Nest: Intimate Views of the Courting, Parenting, and Family Lives of Familiar Birds , that is not too cute and that does not anthropomorphize. Peregrine Falcon nests. Yellow Warbler fledgling. But special. Familiar is not necessarily common.

I happen to think the Crested Cara cara is one of the most beautiful birds in the falcon family. They stay here in Mexico despite the heat, and raise their families. This male hoped right up on the side of my hide. It hurts for food right in the crashing surf, where no other birds really go.

In Costa Rica, even the super shy Slaty-backed Forest-Falcon is seen more often than the island pigeon with the snow-white cap. Owned and run by a local family, they treated us very well, even making sure that we had coffee by 4:30 in the morning. The Bat Falcon that joined us for breakfast. .

Ironically, thanks to the non-sustainable, land poisoning agriculture seen en route, there is a straight, fast, good road that zooms right on up to Los Chiles, the closest town to Cano Negro. I guess that isn’t too surprising since a quick 30 minute float down the river goes right into Nicaragua. We had several Least Bitterns.

Falcons are now known to be related to parrots; vultures to be cousins of storks. Taxonomic tweakings and reshufflings of birds on the Family and Genus levels are too many to count. We have more California Condors , Bald Eagles , and Peregrine Falcons , but there seem to be less Spotted Owls , Burrowing Owls , Sooty Shearwaters.

When you travel north along the highway from Broome towards Willare and Derby you come to a wide bridge with a sign that says “Cockatoo Creek” I would highly recommend that you pull up on the right after you have crossed the bridge and park where the plaque is for the official opening of it.
