My first sightings were on a rubbish tip not far from the town of Brasov in Transylvania. The mountains here have a strong population of these impressive carnivores, and they find rubbish tips irresistible.

It may seem like a grown bird, but the rufous tips on the wing coverts of this Cocoa Thrush tell us it is still in its first year of life. It proved strong enough to take the many knocks and falls that a hard-used scope experiences during its lifetime. Tough, easy to use, great optics – there wasn’t much not to like about the Swarovski except one thing: it was heavy, tipping the scales at around 2000gm. It needed a substantial tripod to support it.

As I walked around to the tip of the point the numbers of gannets kept increasing and I saw that they were continuing to come around the point and into the harbor. It was an invigorating experience and an example of my favorite kind of birding, that of the spectacle. The main thing is the number of gannets! Deno’s Wonder Wheel!

My experience of Common Nighthawks had previously been at dusk as they begin hunting for the night. The white wingbar of a Lesser Nighthawk is usually visible beyond the tips of the tertials. Snowcap and White-tipped Sicklebill – Choice hummingbirds in a speciose, fantastic family of birds. One of those occasions was by invitation from the San Vito Birding Club , a memorable experience I will cover in another blog post.
