This added to the whole birds of prey experience in Big Sky country. The Yellowstone District south of Big Timber is full of campgrounds, if you want to bird right next to the tent. Insider tip: Take some serious insect repellent. On a horseback ride into the mountains, I saw an off-season (unoccupied) eagle’s nest in a cave.

Getting to actually see four species, in the last two weeks, and to hear two more is almost unheard of in my experience. The Great Horned Owls that live in the palm trees right above our RV have returned and brought with them a pair of fledglings. That was no deterrent from landing right in the middle of the road.
