I am sure there are many reasons why these nasty pools of varying degrees of “black” water seem to be magnets for a large number of species. Each of them holds a very nice group of birds year round, and an increased number during the winter migration. The amount of insects that are prevalent is, I am sure, a huge one.

I have been lucky enough to get close views of two massive Old World Vulture species, the Eurasian Griffon and the Egyptian Vulture. Over the course of the following hour or so we observed many different species *coincidentally* alight on the wall near to the body of the fallen yellowlegs. That green grass is not a meadow; it is growing in water deep enough for swimming ducks. The dot in the center of the second photo is a lone Mexican Duck flying just over the water. Most of these are migratory species, for which Lake Cuitzeo is a vital wintering ground. Still life with Avocet and Shoveler.

The photo also illustrates how our drought affects two groups of resident and wintering birds (which number in the hundreds of thousands). I am in communication with birders all over Mexico, and almost everywhere, they have been reporting groups of Cedar Waxwings. I had only tried to bird it once before, a year earlier, and was left thoroughly underwhelmed: no water-loving birds but a couple of Snowy Egrets and three domestic ducks swimming free. Had I missed some then?

Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many.

On my first full day I explored the northern part of the Island and was particularly happy to find a group of Bearded Reedlings – another lifer (perhaps mildly embarrassing for someone who’s been birding for as long as long as I have). When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there.

The Skylarks and Northern Wheatears in the barren fields attract all four European species of harrier (but no Montagu’s for Christmas, sorry). Large groups of Little Bustard are not uncommon in winter. If you feel guilty about that, scan the river for ducks and geese and check out the muddy margins.

In Costa Rica, despite there seeming to be less enthusiasm than previous GBDs, enough local and visiting birders dedicated most of the day to binocular use to give us a fantastic total of 731 species !

Like many of the top NWRs for birding , much of Conboy Lake NWR was obtained with funds from the sale of the Federal Duck Stamp : 94.5% of its acreage was purchased with Duck Stamp funds.

On our way over, we had one Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel and at least one Black Storm-Petrel along with Black Terns and a few other tern species. On both trips, a large group of feeding birds tantalized in the distance but they were just too far to see well. On the way back, we got lucky with views of two Pomarine Jaegers.

Green-backed Gerygones were calling and it is a species we always seek out when we visit. There were no ducks, herons or ibis and only one Great Egret in the length of the gorge that you can walk. There was a small group of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos being destructive as usual! A couple of crocodiles. Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.
