Each of them holds a very nice group of birds year round, and an increased number during the winter migration. Both White Faced, and White Ibis join Black-necked Stilts, Greater Yellowlegs , and Spotted Sandpipers to wade in the shallow flooded fields along side our resident Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

Greater Scaup The female was rather shy, but I was happy to compare it to the many Tufted Ducks that were around as well. Terrestrial species did not show themselves in the drizzle, but a group of Eurasian Siskins provided a nice distraction. A Water Rail was hidden, calling from the reeds. A pair of Muscovy Ducks lounged in a distant tree. Snail Kite Muscovy Duck White-tailed Goldenthroat This small group of Lineated Woodpeckers were deeply engaged in some form of discussion. Other usual wetland suspects lurked in and among the tangled vegetation: Purple Gallinule and Wattled Jacana.

I had only tried to bird it once before, a year earlier, and was left thoroughly underwhelmed: no water-loving birds but a couple of Snowy Egrets and three domestic ducks swimming free. Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many.

Like many of the top NWRs for birding , much of Conboy Lake NWR was obtained with funds from the sale of the Federal Duck Stamp : 94.5% of its acreage was purchased with Duck Stamp funds. When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Two hundred metres further on, two young White-tailed Eagles were soaring. Easily enough, they got it here.

The boat had been chartered by a big group of Mumbai birders to see a Long-billed Dowitcher that would make a most unusual addition to an Indian list. It turns out that the dowitcher was showing so well that the group had had a whipround for the crew to encourage them to stay longer. This was its fourth year. Common Redshank.

There were no ducks, herons or ibis and only one Great Egret in the length of the gorge that you can walk. There was a small group of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos being destructive as usual! Some of the new arrivals that were evident, were Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks, and Pintails, Eared Grebes, Long-billed Dowitchers, and my first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the season. A big surprise was a Northern Harrier hunting along the waterway. The biggest surprise came when I least expected it.

On both trips, a large group of feeding birds tantalized in the distance but they were just too far to see well. Another vagrant that has been hanging out in Costa Rica, an individual of this duck species from either Peru or the Galapagos has been living at the shorebird hotspot of Punta Morales for more than a month.

About mid-morning a group of Boy Scouts arrived with plans to do some work on the platform, including repainting it.
