When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Two hundred metres further on, two young White-tailed Eagles were soaring. Easily enough, they got it here.

There were no ducks, herons or ibis and only one Great Egret in the length of the gorge that you can walk. There was a small group of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos being destructive as usual! A small group of Spinifex Pigeons wandered down for a drink. A couple of crocodiles. The bird-life was quite different too this year.

We dipped on the sapsucker but while we were there, a group of birders from Southern California stumbled upon this Western Screech-Owl ( Megascops kennicottii ) a few hundred yards from our location. Unless those non-birding folks happen to be duck hunters or love to go fishing, they tend to stay away from the marshes, the riparian zones, the bottom lands. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. Large groups of Hooded Merganser , Redhead , Franklin’s Gull , and other floaters were easily spotted.
