My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders. I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine. This means that loons are no longer first!

Fairy Martins were busy nesting under the bridge and the water body and surrounds were home to Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stork, Australasian Grebe, Australasian Darter, Plumed Whistling-Ducks, White-faced Herons and Great Egret to name a few species. This Pied Kingfisher exhibits melanin pigmentation (black) and lack of pigmentation (white) The second group of pigments are called carotenoids and they produce red, orange or yellow feathers. This pigment group is the rarest of the three pigment groups and is found in only a handful of bird families.

Previously we had hundreds of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , but the remaining ducks were very few. Those that had stayed had bred, though and there are a few family groups. Plumed Whistling-Duck and Black-fronted Dotterel We have had Yellow Wagtail present recently and they run along the rock walls chasing insects.

Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. The more brightly coloured female bird remained at the back of the family group as they swam to shore.

As birders, we tend to spend more time in wetlands than most of our peers, neighbors, and family members. The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. They need to learn by trial and error (often deadly to the chicks) where to safely place the nest, how to keep young in a tight group and hide them to avoid predators. Its mostly found on the ground in thickets or the edges of dense vegetation and usually in small family parties. Puffbacks belong to the bush-shrike family Malaconotidae and this group are called puffbacks due to several of the species forming a habit of puffing out their fluffy white back feathers during display.

Here in central Mexico, the winter season always seems to begin with the arrival of various members of the sandpiper family.
