Above the reedbeds, there were numerous Common Sand Martins (Bank Swallows), with a few Barn Swallows , while the large herd of grazing cattle (one of them particularly interested in licking the dust off my car) was followed by two dozen Western Yellow Wagtails. The next morning found me at the Reva Pond with a group of primary school kids.

It actually looked like the station owner was breeding birds rather than cattle! White-winged Black Terns resting on the fence We saw a lovely group of three Red-kneed Dotterel trying to find ground above water and there were 7 Sacred Kingfishers taking advantage of the fence to roost and pounce on tadpoles.

Audubon Associate Naturalist, have led this tour many times, through tornados, droughts, questionable restaurants, and, sadly, the advent of fracking, and every one of my friends who has participated over the years has raved about the experience and the birds (in fact, one member of our group was on his third or fourth trip, I lost count).

There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. I will not name all ducks, but Bufflehead and Canvasback were lifers so they deserve a call-out. A group of about 15 Least Sandpipers was feeding in the shallows. The birds warmed us too.

The roadmap out of lockdown here in the UK has allowed us to meet up in small groups to indulge in outdoor activities, so birders have been gathering in loose flocks to greet the migrants as they head north.

Several Ferruginous Duck and one surprising male Goosander , four Glossy Ibises , Common Kingfishers , Eurasian Hopooes , a high note of a Penduline Tit somewhere from the willows along the canal, Eurasian Spoonbills , European Turtle Doves gently purrring …. I know that because they did their lake tours with me.

As we came through the open fields towards the coast there were numerous Cattle Egrets among the cattle and Straw-necked Ibis. We had our first encounter with a Musk Duck in New South Wales here and then continued on to the reserve. This was particularly useful because it held water and therefore waterbirds! Australian Magpie.

There are no trails as such, but you can follow in the cattle tracks along the edge of the river or the gravel tracks used by vehicles. There was a family of Black-necked Storks that was initially a family group, but over recent weeks they have started to feed separately. Little Pied Cormorant. Great Egret.

You first encounter the Magpie Geese with Cattle Egret along Fiddlers Lane in the mango orchards and they are taking advantage of the shade and the fallen mangos. There are small groups of Black-fronted Dotterels and they can easily hide among the Magpie Geese. Wood Sandpiper and Black-winged Stilt. Dingo at the lagoon.

The biggest surprise is a small group of 4 Snow Buntings, very unusual for the Mediterranean coast but apparently not unheard of in the Camargue. Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula : Lahnaue Wetzlar, HE, Germany, 14 Jan. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis : Camargue, Provence, France, 2 Jan.

After lunch the group moved onto a nearby birding site, Pitt Town Lagoon. Big flocks of Australian Shoverlers had Grey Teal, Grey Duck, Dusky Moorhens and H ardheads mixed in. And as I drove off, some Australian Wood Ducks and a Restless Flycatcher. Could it get any better? Another time. Not a bad way to end a bird-filled day!
