A Short-eared Owl , a winter visit from Europe, appeared briefly hunting low over a distant ditch and two Cattle Egrets , very recent colonizers of the UK, flew in to forage between the feet of a group of cows.

Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding

We were even more delighted as we followed some cattle tracks to discover not only more bird species than we had hoped, but also more Yellow-billed Spoonbills. A Gathering at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

Just before the final leg of the auto route, where it begins to turn back toward the Black-crowned Night-Heron roost, I spotted a substantial group of large white birds foraging just off the road. There were not only Cattle Egrets and Great Egrets ( Ardea alba ) but Snowy Egrets ( Egretta thula ) as well.

Windjana Gorge in 2020

Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. There was a small group of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos being destructive as usual! A small group of Spinifex Pigeons wandered down for a drink. Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.

And while all three of our common Egrets ( Great , Snowy , and Cattle ) are to be seen everywhere you look, only the American White Pelicans are as common as the Shovelers and Pintails. I really have no idea, since I could not be sure whether I was seeing the same groups many times each, or many groups one time each.
