When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Two hundred metres further on, two young White-tailed Eagles were soaring. Easily enough, they got it here.

Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many.

Some of the new arrivals that were evident, were Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks, and Pintails, Eared Grebes, Long-billed Dowitchers, and my first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the season. A big surprise was a Northern Harrier hunting along the waterway. The biggest surprise came when I least expected it.

It was clearly a good year for swallow reproduction at the vly as family groups gathered on overhead wires and dead snags and the sheer volume of swallows was pretty impressive for a non-migratory gathering. scruffy looking Tree Swallow hunting for some bug life. Now and then individual catfish of various species hunt nearer the surface and larger catfish such as the American Channel Cat will take a duck or other water bird. The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. The grassy areas were also patrolled by Laughing Kookaburras , which engaged in the typical watch and wait hunting methods of the kingfisher family, and the engaging Willie Wagtail.

Also on the ground you’ll see your first Finsch’s Duck. This attractive relative of Australia’s Maned Duck is the most common duck you’ll see on the tour, but visitors always love seeing them and their ubiquity doesn’t detract from their attractiveness. It certainly has no known relatives.
