Recently, I did a bit of embankment birding and, while checking floating logs for ducks, I counted European pond turtles (strange things birders do?) Pity, it is the sleeping hours and not the hunting (morning/evening), but at least they are not forced to socialise with people all day. Fanatical – from dawn till dusk.

I can hear the mooing of cows, interrupted by gunshots, while two scared flocks of ducks fly above the delta. In a low tree crown above the road stands an Icterine Warbler , while a smaller flock of Sand Martins hunts insects low above the reeds. High ’tsi-tsi-tsi’ and one turquoise Common Kingfisher flies by.

I think it’s time to hunt Sandhill Cranes. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species.

In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle.

Some of the new arrivals that were evident, were Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks, and Pintails, Eared Grebes, Long-billed Dowitchers, and my first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the season. A big surprise was a Northern Harrier hunting along the waterway. The biggest surprise came when I least expected it.

Black-necked Stilts are nesting along the waters edges, with Willets, Long-billed Curlews, Killdeer, Solitary Sandpipers, Spotted Sandpipers and Semi-palmated Sandpipers joining them in the hunt for food. The Ducks are all gone now, headed back north, so now the waters are populated with a good numbers of Neotropic Cormorants.
