Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. It keeps a monthly record of sightings, so I can tell you that it was in February that I recorded my highest monthly species total (106), while my lowest total was in August (39).

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. Both of these are dabbling ducks while the scaups are divers. Checking some of the other ponds revealed more ducks, namely a group of ten Blue-winged Teal and a staggering number of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

Nordmann’s Greenshank photographed hunting on the Cairns Esplanade [Ken Cross]. There were other target birds in this area of the state; namely Spotted Whistling Duck, Chestnut breasted Cuckoo and the migrant Black faced Monarch. To underline the mystery of this species in 2019 a Nordmann nest was discovered; the first in 40 years!

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there.

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Two species of icterids populated the area, the presence of either was a direct indicator of the degree of water present. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also.

The coastal delta includes low, scrub-dominated hills and brackish marshes, the habitats with the greatest species richness in moderate zones. I can hear the mooing of cows, interrupted by gunshots, while two scared flocks of ducks fly above the delta. High ’tsi-tsi-tsi’ and one turquoise Common Kingfisher flies by.

Access to the large reclamation pond is somewhat restricted, and is circled on two sides with an elevated bike/walking path, providing excellent views to whatever species should be on the water or its shore line. The Ducks are all gone now, headed back north, so now the waters are populated with a good numbers of Neotropic Cormorants.

In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle.
