The Mandarin Duck

I am not actually really sure whether I like the sight of the male Mandarin Duck. Or to put it differently: if an imaginary child of mine ever drew up a male Mandarin Duck out of his or her imagination, I would immediately take away most of the crayons and maybe only leave those necessary to draw the female bird.

Last year, I wrote about the rulemaking process used by the Trump Administration to change the requirements of the art contest for the Federal Duck Stamp. The change was to “permanently” require a mandatory hunting element in each submission. Historically, such elements had been allowed but were not required.

Scaup are the Worst Duck

Of all the ducks in the world scaup are the worst. Scaup are so worthless that when you input “I love scaup” into Google you only get four results and three of them are hunting related. The other closest relation to scaup is the Tufted Duck which, if it were a scaup, would be by far the best scaup that there is.

The number of people who hunt waterfowl in the US has declined since the mid 1990s. This has resulted in a reduction of the number of duck stamps sold. Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations.

Winter Birding in Maastricht

I did not have good views at all, although after a long time observing I had managed to pick up all the ID features, and enjoyed watching its different hunting behaviour compared to the plentiful Great Cormorants. I was very happy about this lifer as I had been hoping to see this species in autumn during my stay on Heligoland.
