Yes, the earth has gone around the sun twice since the uproar from birders and other lovers of wildlife managed to convince the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to table the idea of hunting Sandhill Cranes in Tennessee for two years. Cancel the 17-year-old annual festival, and propose a hunting season on cranes. It’s bad PR.

What do we do about trophy ("sport") hunting?

Popular hunting magazines make animal rights groups like they're the bad guys. They claim to be "conservationists" even though we all know natural selection plays its role in the wild. It seems both political parties do nothing for animals. I've gotten to the point where I don't even vote anymore.

Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. Our Snow Leopard sat, quite Cheetah-like, before stalking off and once again rolling in the gravel, apparently an indication of the desire to mask its scent before a hunt. In fact some of our group decided to head back to camp.

Winter Birding in Maastricht

I did not have good views at all, although after a long time observing I had managed to pick up all the ID features, and enjoyed watching its different hunting behaviour compared to the plentiful Great Cormorants. Terrestrial species did not show themselves in the drizzle, but a group of Eurasian Siskins provided a nice distraction.

Observation is strictly from inside a vehicle, safari style, until you reach the main car park and start exploring the rest of this spacious site on foot.
