Black-throated Sparrow at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Though our visit was all-too-quick it was memorable and enjoyable and should I ever find myself in Las Vegas again I will definitely make it a point to stop back at Red Rock and explore it more thoroughly. One element of Red Rock Canyon that I probably don’t need to see much better is the Black-throated Sparrow.

Le Conte’s Sparrow at Edgemere Landfill, Queens

Then, while walking along a phragmite-lined ditch, a small sparrow flushed, flew a few feet, and dropped back down. I immediately knew it wasn’t one of the usual Savannah Sparrows that populate the old landfill. But this bird, which let me study it at my leisure as it went about its business, didn’t fit either species.

Of Tree I Sing

Eventually, I discovered a most unusual amount of activity centered around a single tree up the hill, with the added bonus that the morning sun was shining from behind me, giving everything on the tree an unusual amount of color and definition. Chipping Sparrow. Plus, Grasshopper Sparrows are unusually beautiful sparrows.
