On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. There are display boards with information around the park and of course it tells you which of the creatures are dangerous to touch!

The beach is in fact named after Captain John Alfred Reddell, who was murdered on 20th October 1899 on board the “Ethel” when he was returning to New Zealand on one of his journeys to transport supplies for the pearl luggers working out of Broome. Of course, I’m speaking of the mysterious Wood Stork , Mycteria americana , the only representative of that famous family to regularly occur north of the Mexican border and present in large numbers along the northern coast of South Carolina, where I found myself a couple weekends back. Nearer to the eastern and southern coasts are extensive wetlands, however, and within these I spent considerable time over the course of three days. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well. Red-legged Honeycreeper , I promise!

Of course you don’t really care if you are a duck! Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. We saw over 50 species of birds during the afternoon and despite all the warnings we did not see any snakes!

It is very easy to access the Central Catchment Nature Reserve by public transport. Then there are the Wild Boars, Plantain Squirrels, Monitor Lizards and of course the bird-life. There is a really good number of bird species to be observed in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and it is an eBird Hotspot. Warning signs.

On other occasions we would encounter numerous caravans being towed or large trucks up to 54 metres long transporting fuel or cattle and we would wisely leave the bitumen if it was not a full width road and let the larger vehicles pass. Of course another danger is the presence of snakes and crocodiles! Cattle can be anywhere!

The most useful resource we have found for finding a trail to go birding along in the Sydney area is one called “wildwalks” and it is particularly good because it offers a wide range of walks of varying lengths and also using public transport. Five Great Cormorants. One unmistakable bird flew across the track and stopped nearby.
