The Great Egret was in breeding plumage and courtship posture–bright lime green lores, head bending down and then snapping up, long, impossibly delicate plumes waving over its body as if possessed by independent spirits. On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. There are display boards with information around the park and of course it tells you which of the creatures are dangerous to touch!

The most useful resource we have found for finding a trail to go birding along in the Sydney area is one called “wildwalks” and it is particularly good because it offers a wide range of walks of varying lengths and also using public transport. Five Great Cormorants. One unmistakable bird flew across the track and stopped nearby.

Nearer to the eastern and southern coasts are extensive wetlands, however, and within these I spent considerable time over the course of three days. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well. Red-legged Honeycreeper , I promise!
