My Old Stomping Grounds

10,000 Birds

Of course I will! My only other experience with an Audubon Club field trip anywhere, on a cold October morning in the American Midwest, was frankly kind of a bust. But this one was a wonderful experience. According to my list, which somehow ended up being the official group list, we saw 41 species in about four hours.

All Is Not Lost, Part II

10,000 Birds

The photo also illustrates how our drought affects two groups of resident and wintering birds (which number in the hundreds of thousands). Both species can theoretically breed in central Mexico, but in my experience are almost exclusively winter visitors. Behind it, you can see the lake’s once-green reedbeds in flames.

You Work with What You’ve Got

10,000 Birds

The Wood-Rails like to move around in a very visible group. We were happy to experience three birds of prey on this jaunt. A Roadside Hawk perched on a post next to, of course, a road. So I was delighted when the Seminary grounds turned out to host at least 6 of these beautiful birds.

Bird of the Year?

10,000 Birds

The second time I saw one was late in 2020 (could be 2021, the pandemic years are a blur), where a small group of photographers were enjoying (apparently) a bird in full view. I experienced this first hand while attending last year’s CBC , but because I’m motivated by feelings I didn’t consider this a true experience.

Being a beginning birder, again

10,000 Birds

It’s a rush any new birder experiences: that of every species being a lifer. Once you’ve been around the birding block a few years, your appreciation for the lifer experience deepens greatly. Which is why we all eventually turn to the one way to combine old-birder experience with new-birder opportunities: travel.

The Fallen Yellowlegs

10,000 Birds

Over the course of the following hour or so we observed many different species *coincidentally* alight on the wall near to the body of the fallen yellowlegs. Animals obviously see death and experience it as we do, so the question is not one of if, but of how. Life departed from yet another little body, and all were notified.

Owling in Trinidad & Tobago

10,000 Birds

While preparing an article this week for a local newspaper on the nighttime denizens of Tobago, it crossed my mind that I never considered owls as a group, far less target species for any particular outing (except for a select few, upon which I shall expound here). It wasn’t yet light, the sky was still a dark blue. Perhaps heard?
