When our local driver asked me in Patois, an English-lexified creole language unique to Jamaica, if we would like to go and see Jamaican Owl , I had no idea what he was talking about. Over 20 of the 28 endemic bird species have been recorded within the hotel grounds. But I remember hearing the owl in my sleep.

Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Wintering Wallcreepers are always a possibility, too, generally in quarries where Eagle Owls are resident. It was photographed on the east embankment. Despite appearances, they are remarkably docile.

Collared Scops Owl – A Cat Head Eagle. For some of the more common or exciting birds, I know the Chinese names as well, such as Maotouying for owl (literally “cat head eagle”, which I think is both cute and accurate) or Xianbasedong for Fairy Pitta (“eight color fairy thrush”).

Why does this little Screech Owl look so horrified? We receive nestling owls who have been fed nothing but hamburger, whose bones are so brittle from lack of calcium that they break when they try to stand. And they would realize that any species whose young tried to nurse with a pointed beak would be a short-lived species.

The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. If it is in immediate danger from cats, try and shoo it away from the cat and lock the cat up indoors (preferably for good) or at least while the bird learns to fly. Owls are a little different. After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”.
