As it turned out, the remaining water was too shallow for ducks, except a few Northern Shovelers. Admittedly, early May is too late to find most duck species in Michoacán, even in a good year.) In fact, I can see many more of these ducks, much closer to home. It was only a bit better for shorebirds and egrets.

In mid-summer, the refuge is full of breeding birds, including Canada Goose, Mallard, Wood Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia Rail, Sandhill Crane, Black Tern, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, etc. of Horicon NWR was purchased with MBCF funds ( i.e., Duck Stamp funds).

Adams, the refuge is one of the few breeding locations for Sandhill Cranes in Washington. Fish and Wildlife Service cannot effectively restore the lake or other natural hydrology. The refuge now supports most of the nesting Sandhills in Washington, with around 25 breeding pairs.

Yet, there was a dark spook in the tree-crowns, a largish raptor, and I wasn’t ready! My scope was still in my rucksack, and by the time I pulled it out, the spook was nowhere to be seen. I observed White-tailed Eagles likely a few thousand times, and this didn’t strike me as the dark young bird.

One Common Raven is disappearing towards its nest among the branches of the poplar plantation, only to reappear a few minutes later to give a good chase – aerial acrobatics included – to its first neighbour, the White-tailed Eagle which breeds in the vicinity. The water is misty-golden and the fishes are all glossy in the early morning sun.

According to these researchers, only the exceptionally intelligent herons acquire the skill of bait fishing. Then the bread-easy-catch connection was made.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. These handsome finches breed in the far north of Europe and come here for the winter only.

Yes, cute little Skylarks were all well and good, but what Kiwis really wanted were birds they could shoot and fish they could, uh, fish. New Zealand had a widespread dabbling duck, the Grey Duck ( Pacific Black Duck if you’re an Aussie) but these were declining a in number because of changes to their habitat.

Over the last few weeks we have seen Roebuck Bay slowly empty as the shorebirds head north to breed. Not all shorebirds migrate, so we will see some of our resident shorebirds breed in the coming months. Red-capped Plovers and Pied Oystercatchers will soon be investing time and energy into breeding along our coastline.

There were grumpy old fishermen, fishing through the closed season when the fish enter the backwaters to spawn, but also carrying handguns on their belts and assuming that, being armed and dangerous, they have every right to the area. All dabbling ducks can dive, but rarely do.

Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. While regular in winter, Pygmy Cormorants do not breed in the vicinity and are absent in spring and summer. Ducks mostly migrate in November, reaching their peak by mid-December.

Though I was duly impressed by the magnitude of the dam, I was more interested in the sleek black bodies of the cormorants as they fished precariously close to the edge. As we left the dam I silently hoped that the cormorants we saw would all make it safely to their breeding grounds!

By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Pygmy Cormorant – winter (it breeds in Serbia, but overwinters in Belgrade). Ferruginous Duck – year round. White-tailed Eagle – year round (breeds inside the city).

Podicipediformes, aka Grebes, are freshwater diving duckish birds that are not ducks. Some of the lakes they breed on have been stocked with salmon and trout. And, the Mink are capable of wiping out large portions of a breeding colony in a short period. At both breeding seasons five lakes contained near 85% of the population.

There are many species that captivate those looking at them: Burrowing Owls , Barn Owls , a variety of fishing-owls, Stygian Owl , Elf Owl , the list goes on and on. Sparrows seem to have an aversion to humid tropical regions, at least as far south as Costa Rica, and the same can be said for Least Flycatcher , some ducks, and Warbling Vireo.
