I spent several hours of an otherwise excellent weekend dipping multiple times on a rare ABA Tufted Duck. Fortunately, Conesus Lake holds all manner of superb waterfowl, including more Common Loons in breeding plumage than I’ve ever seen at one time. Perhaps we should require lifers on anyone’s birthday. Sure beats cake!

Further support for inherent behavior comes from experiments. In another experiment, other species of Darwin Finches were kept next to Woodpecker Finches that used tools. Interestingly some of these ponds are favored by these herons for foraging and have ducks that are fed by people. The behavior was inherent.

Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. There was evidence of terns breeding at some earlier stage by the remaining carcasses in the bush.
