Few birds sport such magnificent breeding plumage as the male ruff, but not a single bird showed more than a hint of this plumage. These ruffs still had a 1,000 or more miles to fly to reach their northern breeding grounds. They were sharing the same habitat as the resident Kentish Plovers, the only wader to breed here.

Whiskered Terns and locusts

Whiskered Terns will breed in this area if the conditions are right. Attempting a photograph of the cattle beside the highway was pointless, because you only got photographs of locusts! If I zoom in on the larger flocks of Whiskered Terns you only get to see a handful of the thousands of birds! Whiskered Terns feeding.

But the way it is, familiarity breeds (relative) contempt. I have seen this bird right at the Bund waterfront, possibly the most famous tourist spot in all of Shanghai. The Cattle Egret (or Eastern Cattle Egret , to be exact, but that would mess with my alphabetic order) can be seen in farmland around Shanghai.

The rain made it to Broome!

The average annual rainfall for Broome is around 500mm and we receive that rainfall over a few months in the summer, which is right now. A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Some of the local ephemeral lakes completely dried up and others almost did before the rain came.
