Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. Red-cockaded Woodpecker. It also meant Red-cockaded Woodpeckers could be nearby. Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are rare. This was my second time on the recreation area specifically looking for the woodpecker, and it looked like another bust. I am a birder and I can claim that out of Serbia’s total of 350+ bird species, highly urbanised inner city areas of Belgrade hold almost 100 birds, while the outskirts have more than 200 species. eBird says that, at the time of writing (April 2017), there are some ten hotspots that have crossed the 100 bird species mark.

The topography looks like it is right out of an early John Wayne movie. There is very little fresh water, at least to be found year round, but the bird populations all seem to do just fine. Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge).
