A pair of nesting Downy Woodpeckers were the highlight of the walk and I wanted to share them with you. The first woodpecker was the male, seen as it flew into a tree and landed right in front of the hole. Most surprising to my eye was how small the hole was in relation to the size of the birds.

As you enter Lassen Volcanic National Park’s northern entrance the first thing you see along the right side of the road is Manzanita Lake with Mount Lassen in the background. Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total!
