So, I spent a lot of time birding this month, and to keep this post at a manageable length, it mostly only covers the first half of May. While I already visited Costa Rica once, I do not feel overly-confident with its birds. And Verbena attracts another specialty bird and a regional endemic (from Honduras to Panama), the Snowcap.

While birding along the highway, a younger man on a motorcycle stopped to talk with me. But this man turned out to have worked with the government habitat protection agency, which is why he stopped when he saw me birding. Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). There is a fantastic paper just out in Science : “Sustained miniaturization and anatomoical innovation in the dinosaurian anceestors of birds” by Michael Lee, Andrea Cau, Darren Naishe and Gareth Dyke. Whales emerge from within the larger group of mammals that includes cattle, deer, pigs, camels, with camels being the most deeply rooted.
