This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers.

If it was any indication of where my passion lay, instead of racing home like the proverbial bat out of hell, I stayed put to monitor this supposed nest. This extremely vocal member of the vireo family utters its rich warble incessantly from sun-up to sun-down but it rarely makes itself visible.

At nighttime this allowed some impromptu spotlighting, and we found many spiders, insects, bats as well as a Lesser Mousedeer and a sleeping Malaysian Flycatcher. The river is a stronghold of the endangered Storm’s Stork , a stunning member of the family, and I saw at least one every day I was there. A side tributary.

It seems his family of 5, had rented a condo that sleeps 8, at Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas. While this trip was primarily scheduled as a family rest/rest/vacation outing, with 13 days left in my Little Big Year, that plan is mostly out of the question. If we could get there, all other expenses were covered.

The saddlebacks are both members of the of the New Zealand wattlebird family, which includes the two kokako (one extinct and one… probably extinct) and the sadly lost Huia. This Saddleback is older and has mostly adult plumage, but still has small wattles. This adult still has some brown on the neck, but fully developed wattles.

Owned and run by a local family, they treated us very well, even making sure that we had coffee by 4:30 in the morning. The Bat Falcon that joined us for breakfast. . On this occasion, the accommodation in question was Ara Ambigua Lodge , and after staying there, I am happy to say that it acts as a good base for this bird-rich zone.

We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide. Best of all the lodge also set out a large white board with lights on, which attracted lots of insects and in turn bats. Decidedly so, you might say. Sepilok was the first, and to my mind probably the best.

Also known as the Flyeater, this tiny bird is the only representative of the Australasian warbler family found in mainland Asia, and very similar to my own Grey Warblers in New Zealand, even their songs. Straight off the bat we found a Little Grebe and a small flock of distant Cotton Pygmy-geese !

Like all members of the Nightjar family, the Buff-collared Nightjar hunts for insects on the wing, at night, and rests immobile during the day, protected by its subtle camouflage. With this sighting, I have now seen four of Michoacán’s six members of the Nightjar family. Nacho assured me that these bats are fruit-eaters.

We got good looks at Yellow-breasted , Crimson-breasted , Yellow-vented , and Orange-bellied Flowerpeckers along with more mundane representatives of the sunbird family, Plain Sunbird and Thick-billed Spiderhunter. Bats under a rocky overhang. All in all, a memorable Malaysian experience.

Primates are exceptional among the mammals, living amphibians (which represent only a small part of the original amphibian family tree) are pretty noisy too. So, probably, there were things we would have to call birds that were less like modern birds in how they flew than are modern bats. Fish are mostly silent on the matter.

The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.
