When I say animals, I was thinking more of large mammals (elephants, buffalo, cheetahs etc…) but other animals are welcome except for obviously domesticated ones. I’d also be interested in speculation on invasive species similar to what happened with rabbits in Australia or the Burmese Python in Florida.

I often like to poke fun at how dangerous the wildlife of Australia is, as ever since the giant man-eating Haast’s Eagle went extinct the land life on New Zealand has been mostly harmless. Shark Bay is one of the most famous tourist destinations in West Australia, and until recently was therefore not a place I was particularly interested in visiting. Common Tree Snakes are one of the few snakes in Australia that are not venomous, which may be a bit boring for some of you! The Common Tree Snakes eat frogs, small reptiles and small mammals and due to their agility it would not be hard for them to capture something around here! This is another migrant from New Guinea, and one that can cause confusion as it is also a mimic and will imitate birds only found in New Guinea while visiting Australia. Not sure how it learnt that one!

I got my first Emus ( Dromaius novaehollandiae ), family Casuariidae, in West Australia back in 2000. The year before I only got one, the shrike-tits (Falcunculidae), although if you include mammals also I finally got my lifer wombat (Vombatidae) too. They year before that were kiwis (Apterygidae) and diving-petrels (Pelecanoididae).

The Australian Brush-turkey ( Alectura lathami ) is a common sight in the rainforests of Australia. A quick walk netted me some Atherton Scrubwrens , an endemic, as well as a Yellow-throated Scrubwren , a species that mostly occurs in southern Australia but has a small disjunct population around the Tableland.

There were several sandy patches that showed evidence of small mammals, but they were no doubt nocturnal. There were very few large trees on the rim, but the one large one was busy with Weebills, Brown Honeyeaters and the inland form of the White-plumed Honeyeater. One large tree on the edge of the rim.
