I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. The next morning, through Yellowhammers and Eurasian Skylarks singing all around me, I went birding. Yes, yes, I know, not countable – it’s not a bird. Never mind, it’s not a bird. There are more than 1100 plant species, the most valuable being the 76 endemics.

Interestingly, the birding lexicon uses other terms to describe unanticipated arrivals in more positive terms. For example, to irrupt , at least as far as animals are concerned, is simply to enter a region suddenly and in very large numbers. Perhaps our outrage at invasive species can be a bit hypocritical at times.

Our birding was particularly productive for the Central Valley but still gives an idea of what can be found in and near urban areas of Costa Rica. This is one heck of a sweet urban bird.

In the more normal years, I would spend January visiting the very best wildfowling spots along the Danube and seeing the best birds there are, so in February I would be well saturated with birds and feeling: Still winter? I observed White-tailed Eagles likely a few thousand times, and this didn’t strike me as the dark young bird.

Some say plain suet keeps starlings away, but I’ve yet to find animal fat that they won’t eat. The above style of suet feeder works well if you get a lot of larger birds like Red-bellied Woodpeckers because the long piece of wood on the bottom gives woodpeckers something to prop their tails on and hold their bodies up.
