However, some of Paso Ancho’s most beautiful species are to be seen right along that river. The Squirrel Cuckoo is one of my personal trigger birds. Squirrel Cuckoos are a foot-and-a-half long; so long that it can be hard to take their picture with my 600mm lens. But in Paso Ancho this species is a common resident.

A handful were patronizing my lawn even before the feeder went up, and no doubt noticed it right away. I wish they were more confiding, as they’re the only birds big enough to hold off the fat, obnoxious squirrels who also showed their faces on the second day. Still no Gray-crowned Rosy-finch , though.

While all this was going on, I discovered that a couple of Gila Woodpeckers had located their nest in a cavity in the Elephant Cactus right next to the one getting all the feeding activity. At some point the female landed right on top of the cactus that contained the nest, and let her wins droop down.

This species is reasonably easy to find if you are in the right kind of habitat – but I am rarely in that type of habitat. And in order to see the bubbles underwater, one needs to be right above the bird. It was diving right behind me – it could not get any closer than that, and still, I haven’t seen it underwater!

At any rate, my brief visit to Sepilok showed me that it is a worthy destination in its own right. We heard, but didn’t see, a Brown Wood-ow l, and best of all a massive cat-sized Red Giant Flying Squirrel and a rabbit-sized Sunda Stink-badger. It isn’t worth worrying about too much. It is hard to tell, but it is massive!

In addition to the Violet Saberwing , just as we were leaveing the lodge, this Scintillant Hummingbird landed right next to the door way. The stay De Silva Biological Station, while well worth it, was a little bit more than we wanted to budget for, so the next best thing was staying right next door.

That’s right, the clever jays are carrying additional acorns in their crop ! Just promise not to tell the squirrels! … Slightly closer examination showed that they were going to fetch acorns! At this location you will certainly find a few of the most common mammal species in the park including the American Pika… Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel… and the Yellow-bellied Marmot.

Fortunately we were able to find a nice RV camp, in the nearby town of Crescent, Oregon, which allowed us to be at the park right after sunrise. Looking out over the lake from one of the many view points as you travel the park, we spotted Peregrines Falcons, American Kestrels, and this young Coopers Hawk , as it flew right over our heads.

This area, with its year round water supply, supports a huge amount of life, with coyotes, fox, bobcat and many different rodents, like this Mexican Ground Squirrel. There is an old dead tree top, right on the edge of the canyon, that looked like it would be a great spot for the passing birds to make a stop.

Because after we found that female she led us right to a male. Its almost as outlandish as an aquatic squirrel. My son tells me that there are such things as aquatic squirrels. All just to get a glimpse of her. Aderman was livered (as evidenced in the below video). But boy am I glad we went to hell and back to get the shots.

On my first trip there, I had the good luck to find the best sites right away. Squirrel Cuckoos ! The answer turned out to be the little town of Paso Ancho, one hour southeast of my home in Morelia, and 3,000 feet lower, at an altitude of “only” 3,300 feet. Russet-crowned Motmots ! Elegant Euphonias ! Stay tuned.

To be honest, quetzals aren’t seen that often right at Myriam’s but they are seen just down the road. We watched Acorn Woodpeckers laugh and dive bomb a squirrel. Myriam’s Quetzales ! Are they her’s? Can there be a more enticing name than for a place that that? Flame-colored Tanagers are pretty common.

This building, though fine in its own right, is but sparsely landscaped and parked in a residential/business ecosystem in the middle of town. This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot. I took home a few of the pellets and found that the owls were feasting on grey squirrels and cottontail rabbits. He was so excited when I described what I had and came right up to meet me. Check out the bones that are clearly visible, you wouldn’t find that with a hawk pellet.

We dropped our bags and got changed and hopped back on the train to go to the end of the line at Pasir Ris. It was not a Milky Stork or a Painted Stork.

I don't know if she was being sarcastic, but in my town I see dead armadillos, opossums, raccoons, all manner of turtles, and squirrels dead in the middle of the road frequently.
