It turned out to be an inspired choice, because my usual style of birding — parking at a trailhead and walking kilometers away from both my car and most other forms of shelter — would indeed have been disastrous. Instead, I was able to stick close to my car, taking shelter in it when necessary, and still see lots of birds.

The viewing platform presented us with a spectacular vista of an unbroken green carpet for as far as the eye could see. However, the torrential rain forced these large cracids back into the now almost completely dark forest just as it pushed us into shelter. Over rolling hills into the distance, there was only verdant jungle.

On our trip to Palm Springs last year we visited the Halls Creek Poo Ponds and that was an excellent place for bird watching and even better was the fact that there were Pink-eared Ducks present. The birds present were feeding rapidly as if they were anticipating the weather that was approaching from the north.

Oriental Plover The other extreme is where you have a very hot day and the birds move off the vegetation on the plains and seek shelter from the heat. They will roost amongst the Oriental Pratincoles and the Little Curlew and all of these species will be higher up the beach than the other shorebirds that are present.

In fact it is not just the eastern coast that is experiencing this phenomenon, but it it also now present along our own coastline here in Broome. The shorebirds present were mostly Great Knot , Grey-tailed Tattlers , Sanderling , Greater Sand Plovers , Red-necked Stints and Red-capped Plovers. Pied Oystercatchers.

I really can’t say how long it will take you, because it depends on the birds present and how much that will slow you down! The only shelter is at the Sailing Club and there are also picnic tables there too. To circumnavigate the reservoir the trail is approximately 3.6 kilometres/2.25

The dam was very full and there were numerous species of birds present. This time we decided to make use of the Rest Area and use the shelter and shade in case of a torrential downpour, which had occurred earlier in the day. Looking across from the shelter we observed a tree beside the road that had an oddness about its shape.

We all have wide verandahs to shelter under and enjoy those tropical storms and gutters are a feature we just don’t need. One of the sheltered bays on Isla Isabel. Also present are six species of reptiles, including the numerous Brown Iguanas. . It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds. There are numerous factors that make Isla Isabel such a diverse and phenomenal wildlife destination.

It is a sheltered area with numerous picnic tables for the people visiting and bird feeders for the feathered variety of visitors. There were several Herring Gulls and Black-headed Gulls present and it wasn’t until they took flight that we realised where the gull was and could then keep an eye on it. Whooper Swan.

Sergio and I continue to a sloth shelter, where, waiting for the tour, I sit in a café. And a proof that a good-sized population of these apex predators use the reserve is a certificate that all lower links of the food chains are also present in this ecosystem. The female Pied Oystercatcher was guarding and sheltering the Pied Oystercatcher chicks when we visited two days after hatching and the egg shell had been removed from the nest. There are alarm calls and calming calls when a danger is no longer present and over the years we have learnt the variety of calls.

There were Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes and Mistletoebirds present and the constant call of the Red-browed Pardalote. Wallabies were still digging in the salty ground and there was shade and shelter for them inside the crater. The centre of the crater was in full bloom with a huge variety of native plants.

In the more sheltered areas the heathland is given over to eucalyptus forests. Also present are the large Red Wattlebird. Where there had been a fairly dense stand of Casuarina ( Allocasuarina ) about two metres high was now a waist high tangle of lots of different heathland plants. And a blaze of wildlflowers too.

There are a lot of small sheltered bays along the coast and you can choose to walk along the beach or promenade. On the sheltered side of several jetties I came across small groups of up to seven Hoary-headed Grebes bobbing along. The sea is shallow in most places, hence all of the jetties, and the water is very clear. Feeding frenzy.

Eastern Park currently has a lot of Pied Currawongs present and they are extremely vocal as they go about their business! I wandered back along the coast in the afternoon with Grey Fantails flitting among the trees and I waited in one of the shelters for Grant to collect me. Pied Currawong.

It appeared that Lake Bindegolly National Park could also offer us the same birding opportunities if there was water present. The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park.
