The Change in Seasons

Breeding Crested Pigeons in Broome

The Crested Pigeon family remained in the tree away from danger for quite some time with both parents present. Although Crested Pigeons are quite a common bird Australia-wide you don’t always find a nest, so that you are able to observe the family grow. The Crested Pigeon will breed at any time of year if the conditions are right.

Black Kites breeding

The Black Kites are distinguished in flight by their forked tail , which easily separates them from the numerous Whistling Kites that are present around Broome. Cute and Cuter

Fortunately, lots of other cute birds were present. These little Tyrant Flycatchers, present from Mexico through Colombia, never fail to charm, with their jaunty crests and characteristic “chewY-chewY!” Oh well, I’ll just have to come back again in another month. Tufted Flycatchers could be poster-birds for cuteness.

Lovely by the Lake

You can always count on Northern Pintails being present at the lake in winter. I’m also a big fan of birds lining up in pairs for purpose of comparison. These two are a Cinnamon Teal and a Blue-winged Teal. Ring-billed Gulls are the most common gulls at the lake. But they rarely fly by me at such a close distance.

Plant Shop or Birding Hotspot?

Both Plumbeous Kite and Fork-tailed Flycatcher are present for the southern winter, the former breeds here, the latter tends to bring their young with them. A member of the “trilling” (and thrilling) subspecies group of the Long-billed Gnatwren is present throughout Trinidad, and is yet another headache-inducing species.

Willie Wagtails in Broome

Willie Wagtails are present across much of the mainland and they are a large fantail. The Willie Wagtail – Rhipidura leucophrys is one of Australia’s most widespread bird species, but it is not observed all year round close to our home in Broome. They are distinct with their black and white plumage and they are extremely vocal.

Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireos are still present! Mountain Trogons are also still present! Other flagship species from that trip which are still present, but did not give me great photos on this latest outing, are the White-striped Woodcreeper , Transvolcanic Jay , and Rufous-capped Brushfinch. But, thank God, it has not.

Shorebirds amongst the tomato jellyfish

Here are a few photos of the shorebirds that did stay despite the tomato jellyfish being present. There were less shorebirds on the beach the other day than I expected, but with the smell I can quite understand them looking for somewhere else to roost at high tide! Greater Sand Plover. Anywhere else would be less smelly! Red-capped Plover.

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. This endearing and very familiar species grabbed the attention of all present, including the official event photographer from the THA! Three of them in fact, rare visitors from the north. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter.

The Wintering Wood-Warblers of Costa Rica

Pretty uncommon and greatly outnumbered by the Mourning Warbler but still present in brushy habitats of the highlands. Little Egret in the Indian Ocean

The water is clear and it would be easy for the Little Egret to see the fish that are present. It is quite content running about in quite deep water up to its body. At this time of year the Indian Ocean is generally flat with very few waves. Little Egret. They are both the white and grey morph.

I can’t walk too quietly, because I need snakes to know I am present and allow them to move away from the trail that I am on. There were no adult birds present at the time. There have been very few occasions that I have encountered anybody else in the reserve, but I have encountered two Tiger Snakes. Brown Goshawk nest.

A flock of Spoonbills

We had encountered a Yellow-billed Spoonbill in the area last year that appeared to have a stick embedded in its breast, but we have no idea if this is one of the birds now present. We know that Yellow-billed Spoonbills breed further south and no doubt start to roam around once they leave the breeding colony.

Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes

They are present throughout much of Australia and as their name would suggest they have a black face! Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes – Coracina novaehollandiae are a common bird species around our home in Broome, Western Australia. They have one very distinct feature when they land, which is that they shuffle their wings.

Another Bird Surprise for Costa Rica- Buff-collared Nightjar!

If they had already been present, one would think that someone would have found them but then again, they were seen in a restricted and little visited area, and are nocturnal. Why weren’t they discovered before then? I don’t know the answers but in all likelihood, that they represent a newly established localized population.

One More Reason for Gratitude

Our first stop, at the reservoir surrounded by temperate thorn fores, a lone Least Grebe was present, as was a Belted Kingfisher whose presence I had predicted. The male Ruby-throated Hummingbird I had seen on my last visit is still present, but stayed in deep brush, denying me a photo. Migratory Lark Sparrows were everywhere.

Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens at Geikie Gorge

We were only in the area for three minutes to minimise disturbance, but by keeping our distance I was able to capture them behaving as if we were not present. We watched the female Purple-crowned Fairy-wren preen and then the male Purple-crowned Fairy-wren joined her.
