Sunrise found me in a car with Rich Kelly and Seth Ausubel, on our way to Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx where we would be joined by Bob Dieterich and Gene Herskovics for an owl prowl. One owl down, two to go! We still needed Barred Owl !

Back in November a small group of lucky shorebird surveyors found a Burrowing Owl sitting tight on a jetty on the south side of Masonboro Inlet in southeastern North Carolina. Fast forward to late February when a birder re-found the little owl, perched up upon the rocks in precisely the same place birders had left it in November.

As I opined in my post back in 2010 (and continue to preach) the Western Burrowing Owl needs a conservation plan. A pair of Burrowing Owls fledged six young! After all, the Western Burrowing Owl is listed as “ Climate Endangered ” by the Audubon Society. In the summer of 2015 our investment paid off.

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. There are distinct differences between Eastern Screech-Owl morphs.

The Wood-Rails like to move around in a very visible group. And two Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls toot-toot-tooted from the brush. There is also a family of Barn Owls on the premises, and I have briefly seen the largest of them (enormous!) A Roadside Hawk perched on a post next to, of course, a road. flying by at night.

Even having a conversation at night can prove difficult, as we are often interrupted by the wail of a Common Potoo , or the intermittent hooting of a Tropical Screech-Owl. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls are fairly common as well, only last night a Barn Owl shrieked as it flew over.

As I was driving out, I stopped to appreciate a small group of American Flamingos flying overhead. We had shared our porch with a bold Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl the night before, so the expectation was there. Nothing could move around in the leaf litter without full attention from this Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.

We went because Desi, my four-year-old son, wanted to see a Snowy Owl after hearing about and seeing pictures of all of the owls his dad had been seeing this winter. Birding that starts with the largest eagle of the continent certainly bears promises… The next stop is the town park in Opovo, north of Belgrade, where local bird expert Ceda Vuckovic reported one, locally rare, Short-eared Owl. Long-eared Owls are irresistibly cute. Not far from it, several Long-eared Owls douse in winter sun.

Merlin and Short-Eared Owl are almost a “dead cert” in winter. Large groups of Little Bustard are not uncommon in winter. The Skylarks and Northern Wheatears in the barren fields attract all four European species of harrier (but no Montagu’s for Christmas, sorry). The only guaranteed sighting would be the Zitting Cisticola.

This one is a female, although there was more than one male present in the group of some 10 that I saw. Like Paso Ancho, the La Escalera area is a great place to see Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls. Your eyes do not deceive you; the woodpecker is significantly larger than the owl. For the most part, the rest of the day was unspectacular.

To properly assess owls, other night birds, and the dawn chorus, you really have to be out and about by 4:30. Pre-dawn birding for us on October 8 gave four owl species, a Common Potoo (not so common), and then a host of species right at and just after dawn. At the beach itself, we were met by stiff winds and dozens of weekenders.
