It is also a good description of the birding in southernmost Florida. Sure, Miami and the Florida Keys do not boast any endemics ( ‘Cape Sable’ Seaside Sparrow is close) at the species level. Many visitors who come through Orlando or Tampa see maybe eight or ten species on a winter trip.

Broward County has one of the highest densities of Burrowing Owls in Florida. It also has one of the highest human population densities in the state. Not surprisingly, this brings Burrowing Owls into close contact with humans across the county. This is unfortunately an all too common problem for these owls in Florida.

Miami, Florida has a reputation among the birding community for being overrun with exotic bird species. However, the typical birding experience for someone down here also includes a large menagerie of other species such as Orange-winged Parrot , Mitred Parakeet , Egyptian Goose and Nutmeg Mannikin. It was odd to realize that with a temperature of 85 degrees F and a breeze, I felt like “fall” had begun in Northwest Florida. In some areas wooden docks and boardwalks provided the only evidence of nearby human habitation; in others, multi-colored, bay-front homes enjoyed short walks to the water. A view of East Bay.

The magnificent, adorable, and dangerous breeding season for both shorebirds and seabirds along the Florida Panhandle. While I walked, parallel to the saltwater, I saw three Florida Department of Environmental Protection staff members putting up the “do not cross” signs that cordoned off dunes from trespassing by us humans.

Linking the mainland of the Florida Panhandle to the barrier island of Navarre Beach, half the bridge structure slopes to the water as sandy edges and sea wall. A few miles from my home, a bridge rises gradually over the water of Santa Rosa Sound. Today, the seabirds also nest on the gravel rooftops of buildings.

When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling.
