Marsh and Long-tailed Tit joined the list, quickly followed by Nuthatch (heard but not seen), Great Spotted Woodpecker and Jay. Treecreeper would have been a bonus, but none were to be seen.

The grazers are glorified farm animals, but they have been labelled by some very irresponsible people as “wild”. but walking to the Schollevaar hide I saw Common Chaffinch, Eurasian Tree Sparrow , European Stonechat , Eurasian Blackbird , Eurasian Blue Tit , Common Kestrel and even a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

The namesake “lake” generally only exists when there is enough runoff during the spring, as the area was extensively modified for farming years ago. There were several conspicuous groups of Hairy Woodpeckers, including this female. When I arrived in the morning, there were many birds and no people.

Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals , Downy Woodpeckers. Known as the Crested Bobwhite , this small quail persists in any number of weedy fields, even lives on some coffee farms. Rough Cooper’s Hawks , occasional harriers and other raptors flapping through the brittle November airs of a vacant weedy field.

You could add Middle Spotted and Grey-headed Woodpeckers to the list. Squacco Heron – the same as previous, from the left Danube bank levees, also the Veliko Blato Lake (Mika Alas fish farm in the suburb of Krnjaca, #3). Syrian Woodpecker is a species of forest edges or open woodland and parks; it doesn’t go into closed canopy forest.

Black Woodpeckers are still relatively easy to hear and see. Sombre T**s are easier, but require traditional farming landscapes and old orchards. Through bare tree branches, the woodpeckers become easier to observe: Syrian , Great , Middle and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker , together with Grey-headed , Eurasian Green and Black Woodpeckers.

The house is on a working farm, in the far back end of a large mountain valley and tremendous. This Black-cheeked Woodpecker was shot right off the upper patio off our room. The local owner of the hostel had kept back a few hands of the bananas that were harvested on the farm, and hung them for the birds.

The trail wove downhill, around farm buildings demonstrative of the agricultural history of the site before it became protected. Acorn Woodpeckers squeaked to each other as they moved up and down bare tree trunks, and a soft owl hoot echoed from the distance. Sunset at Elkhorn Slough.

Just look for the biggest, darkest green spot and that’s the farm, the last sizeable remnant of intact rainforest in the area. We would find out shortly after arriving at the farm but first we had to traverse muddy pastures with hedgerows where Red-eyed Vireos and Summer Tanagers fed. What still lived there? The damaged forest.

We were visited by a couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers. Unfortunately, their numbers are beginning to dwindle rapidly, as farm lands eliminate their habitat. The biggest highlight of their back yard was a Eurasian Nuthatch. This diminutive little bird turned out to be the 800th Bird of the year! Here is that very Eurasian Nuthatch.
