Usually, maize is on the menu, only occasionally carrion or dead trout from a nearby fish farm. I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. There are more than 1100 plant species, the most valuable being the 76 endemics. Other species include Roe Deer (also spotted), Wildcat , European Pine Marten and Otter.

Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals , Downy Woodpeckers. Known as the Crested Bobwhite , this small quail persists in any number of weedy fields, even lives on some coffee farms. Brown Jays also flutter by and those are just a few of the species that still occur. So far south that another, more tropical bobwhite takes its place.

The raising of the bins took place along roads through semi-shaded coffee farms and on the grounds of Villa San Ignacio , a hotel with big old wonderful trees and regenerating forest. But, they still occur, the most common species being Black Vulture , Turkey Vulture , Gray Hawk , Short-tailed Hawk , and Yellow-headed and Crested Caracaras.

Like my two previous visits I spent one day that I didn’t have to lead any field trips doing a run through central Florida looking for some of the specialty species of the region. The list includes Bachmann’s Sparrow , Red-cockaded Woodpecker , Crested Caracara , Snail Kite , and, oddly, Whooping Crane. He likes it there.

We did get introduced to Geiner Huertas Reyes, who took us for a walk along part of the river and into a public park, where we put together a nice list of 61 species. It’s a bio-energetic, organic farm. It’s not a huge block of forest but it’s large enough to still host several deep forest species and provide valuable habitat for many migrants. Since this is an organic farm, the growing areas also provide lots of habitat for migrants and many local species, and are thus very birdy.

Along that stretch, we enjoyed Fork-tailed Flycatchers and other species in the open fields and marshes including Harriss’s Hawk , the local Nicaraguan Seed-Finch , and, best of all, a pair of normally sneaky and secretive Yellow-breasted Crakes walking in the open through a grassy marsh! They weren’t joking.

I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. The ES NERR is a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot, drawing birders from around the country and around the globe, all happy to see as many of the over 200 species recorded here as possible.
