As these odd cotingas called to each other, a small group of Spix’s Guan rummaged through the high branches of the canopy, running with ease on swaying limbs. A group of about 15 Least Sandpipers was feeding in the shallows. A Merlin had just attempted to grab breakfast before our very eyes… She missed and while we were happy for the sandpipers – they are very pretty – the excitement we felt was for the falcon. What a spectacle. The excitement was far from over.

The calling Collared Forest-Falcon was also cool, so was Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer (the species at the top of this post), and so were the 120 other plus species we had from 4:30 to 8 just on that one road. A final check turned up a distant calling Laughing Falcon but not much else. Punta Uva. Male White-flanked Antwren.

A Peregrine Falcon was seen in the distance, one of the day’s few species I could also have seen in Mexico. The locals were also excited when a small group of Black Storks flew overhead. Still, after the smaller group flew overhead, a larger group followed. One European Sparrowhawk turned up.

In the Orinoco, the largest observed groups number 30, but average is just above five. We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. At first one, then two more, then one more, and altogether some 6 or 7 dolphins were coming to the surface.

When you review the system, it makes perfect sense: falcons are placed with hawks, nightjars are next to owls, and grebes are close to ducks, rather than separated from them by quail and grouse. Even the coat of arms of Sao Tome and Principe consists of a Red-footed Falcon (in spite of the fact that this is clearly a Peregrine ) on the left and an African Grey Parrot on the right holding a shield with a palm tree. Even though they saw a lot in a small area, the highest number of species found by an individual was 261 species identified by German Aguilar Vega, and the highest team total was 542 species collectively identified by the Jacanas Costa Rica, a group of more than 100 women birders who submitted lists from various parts of the country.

This one is a female, although there was more than one male present in the group of some 10 that I saw. It was also a pleasure to get a picture of a Laughing Falcon , although from quite a distance. And yes, you read correctly: Nobody knows where the Sinaloa Martin spends the winter. Back to a (satisfied) normal.
