Located right where the Yangtze River enters the sea (and dividing it into two parts), it is mostly flat farmland. The many small ponds and waterways attract quite a few ducks, though presumably due to their China experience, they are extremely wary of people. These Eurasian Teal s know they are treading on thin ice in China.

They are about the same length (NL 6.2in / 158mm; EL 6.3in / 160mm) and weight (NL 30oz / 850g; EL 29.6oz / 840g), and obviously, the same lens diameter, hence, they should feel the same, right? Next time I will try my local patch of Beljarica backwaters in Belgrade and check how much different the NL experience is.

Further support for inherent behavior comes from experiments. In another experiment, other species of Darwin Finches were kept next to Woodpecker Finches that used tools. It may take just being at the right place at the right time. They only need to master the technique by practicing; they are born knowing what to do.

Those Eagles you’re hearing everyone talk about right now aren’t the ones you typically seek while birding, but rather the ones from Philadelphia that just won Super Bowl LII. Unsurprisingly, I spotted at least ten of them, including one victoriously brandishing a duck carcass. Well, they did it.

Were we to ascribe to weekends the taxonomy of birds, our days would likely resemble our lists: for every resplendent songbird or wild raptor would be ten ordinary gulls or pigeons, interesting in their own rights but hardly worth raving about. They found twenty-four species of ducks, geese, and swans, not bad for a half-day.

As usual, my experience with such boardwalks was somewhat underwhelming, as was Eshowe as a whole, but there were still a few birds worth mentioning at the forest and in the area surrounding Eshowe. These Hadada Ibis were right in the garden of the place where we stayed. I think the people running the place even fed them.

The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations.

They got the message right. After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be. For example, the White-headed Duck is nowadays a rarity in Europe (okay, excluding Spain, I know… that Spain …), but until some 50 years ago, it used to breed in Serbia.

A female Mallard was running on the water right out of the thickets, flapping its wing frantically. The Mallard did something that all dabbling ducks can do but I haven’t seen any of them doing it but this one – it took a dive and disappeared underwater.

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. I can recommend it.

Perhaps on a lakewatch while ducks flew past and you hoped for a Long-tailed Jaeger ? Someone at Swarovski must have done something right because the persistent fog that had haunted us on our hike up the mountain parted temporarily and allowed us to focus on a Eurasian Bullfinch perched high on an evergreen. And play with them we did!
