The shallows at its lower end are full of Tufted Ducks (500) and Common Pochards (350), Great Cormorants (50), all of them dissolving in the mist hanging low over water and hiding further rafts. A few dozen Common Goldeneyes and several Smews are among them but it takes a scope to locate these diminutive ducks.

Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. Simply, they are among the most beautiful ducks around.

A female Mallard was running on the water right out of the thickets, flapping its wing frantically. The Mallard did something that all dabbling ducks can do but I haven’t seen any of them doing it but this one – it took a dive and disappeared underwater. But no eagles appeared; or at least none that I was prepared to tick.

Oh, the joys of urban birding… Add half a dozen Ferruginous Ducks (cover photo), two Whiskered and 40 Black Terns to the previous picture, plus an eagle, an immature White-tailed Eagle. To complete the scene the African Fish Eagle ( Haliaeetus vocifer ) was circling above us, yelping a triumphant high-pitched ‘Kyowkow- kow!’. ‘By or a croc was swimming right under the bottom of the kayak….

Europe lost the Buttonquail (but abundant in Africa) but the Griffon, Cinereous Vulture (José Leal’s picture below) and several eagles are making a spectacular comeback. In the book, one picture stood out in particular: the White-headed Duck. Even so, the idea of one day going out to find this rare duck appealed to me.

Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! Ducks and other waterbirds : I could still see Northern Shoveler, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Pintail , and various gulls, terns, and shorebirds. With regular birding in the right places, the most likely additions will be White-tailed Hawk, Pearl Kite, Mississippi Kite, Bicolored Hawk, and Black Hawk-Eagle (should have had that one already!).

When discussing this topic for local media, I often say that because of their White-tailed Eagles , the Scottish island of Mull makes 2 million pounds per year from birders alone. By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once.
