Actually, I visited the Two Towers twice, had about 50 bird species each time and about 60 in total, so this is sort of a composite tour description. A few dozen Common Goldeneyes and several Smews are among them but it takes a scope to locate these diminutive ducks. In recent years, two races did become full species.).

Photo: This area holds 3 to 4 breeding pairs of White-tailed Eagles , which represents the biggest density per square mile anywhere in the country. The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.

A few paddle strokes down the river and on the right bank there were four Impala antelopes ( Aepyceros melampus ). Among 60 or so heron species in the world this is the only one using this peculiar fishing technique. The gentleman living on a farm by the Ngotwane Dam said ‘A croc took my dog, right there!’. How can I not be?

Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! And this is the White Sea Eagle. This held true of most species.

However, some birds still stand out from the rest, and they tend to be the rare ones like these species: Arctic Tern : Unexpected, seen very close on land and in flight, and a lifer that I should have got at some point when living and birding up north. I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. I ticked off 9 lifers.
