As is often the case for tropical ecosystems, there may be hundreds of species of birds at a site, but many of them are naturally rare.

Crested Serpent-eagle

The serpent-eagles of the genus Spilornis are an Asian group, not to be confused with two different genera found in Africa or, for that matter, the snake-eagles, a mostly African but also European and Asian genus (simple, right?). This species ranges from India to Japan and south down Borneo. Feel the power of the glower!

A Year of Birding in Costa Rica- Highlights and a Few Birds Missed

First birds came in the form of migrants and resident species that live in an oasis of precious green space near home. Those kept me below the 700 species threshhold but I won’t complain about 691 species. 48 Hummingbird Species. I also saw a high percentage of the raptor species possible in Costa Rica.

And they never do explain why a Harris’s Hawk in the Hudson Valley doesn’t bring a horde of birdwatchers flooding in to further complicate the supernatural shenanigans (although if they dismissed it as a falconry bird based on its behavior, they were quite right.). People have heard of eagles. Warning: spoilers, sarcasm.)

The Belgrade Amazon Campaign or the House of the Eagle

Despite mostly guiding them, I still somehow managed to see a European Badger sitting and watching me back for several seconds, before it slipped into bushes and quite a few White-tailed Eagles , e.g. four in just one morning. And how about Black Storks, otters and eagles? Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice.
