Saturday morning, 30 August 2014, was a perfect time for shorebirding at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s East Pond. When I finally took myself away from the dowitchers I scanned north and spotted a young Bald Eagle feeding on a duck. Then the eagle took off from where it was hiding and all the shorebirds near me skedaddled.

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

The only time that the joyous chaos of the coot flock is wielded in one common goal is when the resident Bald Eagles take flight and every single individual skitters away a short distance, as if the difference between free coot and eagle food is about 20 feet of waterspace. Bald Eagle. A young Bald Eagle , our second of the day, preceded us onto the pond but the first good birds we spotted on the actual pond were a quartet of Northern Pintails that conveniently flew right past us.
