To complete the scene the African Fish Eagle ( Haliaeetus vocifer ) was circling above us, yelping a triumphant high-pitched ‘Kyowkow- kow!’. ‘By or a croc was swimming right under the bottom of the kayak….

There were grumpy old fishermen, fishing through the closed season when the fish enter the backwaters to spawn, but also carrying handguns on their belts and assuming that, being armed and dangerous, they have every right to the area. A few of the highlights include ; Black Baza, Crested Serpent-eagle, Blue-rumped Parrot, Greater Coucal, Spotted Wood-owl , Dollarbird, Oriental Pied-hornbill, Mangrove Pitta, Golden-bellied Gerygone, Pied Triller, Ashy Minivet, Olive-winged Bulbul, Arctic Warbler. Spotted Wood-owl. You may also find familiar faces. Black-crowned Night Heron.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies.
