This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. This particular borrow pit is right beside the highway around seventy kilometres from Broome and is always worth stopping at.

There is only so much water that a bird can take and even the ducks appear to get a bit sick of constantly being wet! Wandering Whistling-Ducks under the fence. It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. Loess bluff with numerous bee-eaters and one Northern Wheatear and, cut into a low grassy ridge, the set of tracks veers right. A lazy raft of Ferruginous Ducks and, overhead, two Common Cuckoos chasing each other. The Danube shallows are waterless. When you travel north along the highway from Broome towards Willare and Derby you come to a wide bridge with a sign that says “Cockatoo Creek” I would highly recommend that you pull up on the right after you have crossed the bridge and park where the plaque is for the official opening of it. The water is right to the edge of the highway in some areas as you across the plains. The cattle are clever enough to move across the property and get away from the deep water. Even the Pacific Black Ducks have decided they need to stand on the gate to get out of the water when they have had enough! Glossy Ibis on the move.

The average annual rainfall for Broome is around 500mm and we receive that rainfall over a few months in the summer, which is right now. A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Plumed-Whistling-Ducks. It is a slow process sorting out the flood damage.

The path along the right (east) bank of the river leads along a cycle path with Asian Koels , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Laced Woodpeckers and Oriental Magpie Robins all likely. Around the edges you may see White-breasted Waterhens , Yellow Bitterns and Lesser Whistling Ducks. You may also find familiar faces. Black-crowned Night Heron.

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. But such a shallow water depth doesn’t work for our many duck species, and these, along with most gulls, terns, grebes, and larger shorebirds, were nowhere to be seen after the first two weeks of January. But mostly, there was just lots and lots of water.

There is very little traffic about at this time of year, but there are a lot of cattle wandering across the road and you need to be alert. The Derby Wharf was no good for observing Great-billed Herons , because the tide was right in and the wind was horrendous. Although we have not had much rain this year so far the land is now green.

It was very damp along the edges of the road and there were two male Superb Lyrebirds busy kicking through the leaves right on the edge of the road. As we came through the open fields towards the coast there were numerous Cattle Egrets among the cattle and Straw-necked Ibis.

Palmerston lies to the south east and Darwin to the north west and there is a bicycle path almost right to the reserve. You could not leave the road due to the flooded land, but there was sufficient room to pull right over and observe the birdlife. The fence-lines were also good roost sites for the many Whiskered Terns and the majority of the ducks in the deeper water were Pacific Black Ducks and Hard Heads.
