It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. The genus Bucephala includes three familiar ducks with big heads. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.

We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. I don’t know much about prairies, but I have discovered that there is more to them than just grass, and that they are home to hundreds of butterfly and bee species and thousands of moth species.

When you travel north along the highway from Broome towards Willare and Derby you come to a wide bridge with a sign that says “Cockatoo Creek” I would highly recommend that you pull up on the right after you have crossed the bridge and park where the plaque is for the official opening of it. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris. Yellow Bittern.

This lake, with a surface area of up to 150 square miles in good years, is my go-to site for dozens of waterfowl and shorebird species, so I take its health personally. It is also a vital wintering and migratory site for most of these species, so I imagine they take its health very personally, as well.

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. Dragonflies photobombing on the right as we approach. You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies.

It has a small population of approximately 1100 people and is a major hub for the local indigenous people and for the cattle industry. People still head to Halls Creek in search of gold and it is possible to obtain a Miner’s Right to do just that for $25. Pink-eared Ducks. Royal Spoonbill , Eurasian Coot and Grey Teal.

The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. From the bulbuls we went in search of another introduced species that has taken to south Florida like home. We needed countable species!

There is very little traffic about at this time of year, but there are a lot of cattle wandering across the road and you need to be alert. We checked out the Derby Airport and there were Masked Lapwings there as usual and several other bird species at a small wetland that had formed from recent rain. Two Australian Spotted Crake.

Palmerston lies to the south east and Darwin to the north west and there is a bicycle path almost right to the reserve. You first encounter the Magpie Geese with Cattle Egret along Fiddlers Lane in the mango orchards and they are taking advantage of the shade and the fallen mangos. Magpie Geese. White-necked Herons.

I pulled over, as this was only the third time I have seen this species, and found a few Australian White Ibis among them, along with Purple Swamphens. The only other time I have seen this species before was in Victoria, at the same site that I first saw Straw-necked Ibis at as it happens. After that? Another time.

You could not leave the road due to the flooded land, but there was sufficient room to pull right over and observe the birdlife. The fence-lines were also good roost sites for the many Whiskered Terns and the majority of the ducks in the deeper water were Pacific Black Ducks and Hard Heads. Brolga and martin species.

Interestingly for me, the research paper calls throwing out the eggs infanticide, which makes me feel a bit queasy as this might potentially be on the wrong side of the Roe vs. Wade (or “Right vs. Wrong”, as The Onion calls it) debate. Swinhoe’s White-eye was just promoted to the rank of a full species in 2018.
