It is getting really hot now, 30oC and I am in a car in the open, without any shade… any shade big enough for a man – trackside bushes offer bits of shade large enough for a dog to lie down. Well, this dirt track is only for dogs and birders, that is for sure. A few moored boats with piles of fishing nets, but no people.

A shot or two coming from the opposite bank, but they do not sound like geese shooting – more like boar hunting. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle. Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience.
