In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle.

Poor researchers Nicola Coumi and Rob Slotow failed to find anything particularly interesting about vigilance in Bronze Mannikin groups.

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. The birds are now breeding in the area, but are quite happy to keep coming to the daily feeding station in groups of over 100 birds. My favorite of the stay was this White-cheeked Bulbul.

Deep in a walking reverie, I was startled out of my daydream by a group of tiny terns perched at the edge of a sand embankment, looking over at me as I looked at them. The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. The dog tracks did not lead to any birds, but the wounded snake had a Brahminy Kite on it until I came along on my bike and took a photo. I hope you enjoy these photos!

Large groups of Hooded Merganser , Redhead , Franklin’s Gull , and other floaters were easily spotted. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. We got at least three sub-species but the highlight was a Wilson’s Snipe we flushed. We were happy enough for we were getting reasonable views.
