They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled.

Experiencing Spring at EVOA

While walking the dog I could hear Serin , Wren and several Black Redstarts proclaiming their territories. Interestingly, a bird of prey set off a psychological experiment. The sentinels of a Portuguese spring were singing. Mid-February is an early start for spring – even this far south – but spring is spring, and birds were waiting.

Shearwaters from Shore

According to eBird, there have been approximately 270 species seen at the hotspot that includes the harbor. The evening of September 7, 2012 was a truly memorable birding experience. I just happened to be there to experience it. Of course, unexpected experiences such as this are one of the great appeals of birding.

When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. And the crying would never stop.

We chain them, use them for experiments, eat them in some countries and make them wear funny sweaters in others. The most famous example of military dogs is the Vietnam dogs who faithfully served American soldiers and then were abandoned to unknown fates after we left the country. I don't like it.
