Two weekends ago I was scheduled to take part in a live birding video, one of twenty birders from across North and South America who were out and about looking for good birds to share with the world through Swarovski Optik Birding’s Facebook page. But, I am sure skeptics are saying, the video quality can’t be that good, can it?

Birding: Special Lockdown Edition

My other function at the compound – apart from documenting the blackbird – presumably is to entertain the other residents. After asking me to show her some of the blackbird photos on the camera screen, it turned out what she really wanted was to pose behind my camera, and for me to document this with her mobile phone.

Some Birding News about Birders in Costa Rica

Thanks to that bird’s choice of hunting grounds and David having plenty of time to watch it, he has documented the bird chasing everything from motmots to large woodpeckers as well as occasional visits from the parents. A friend of mine, Juan Diego Vargas also made a fun video about the visit.

The Fallen Yellowlegs

Take note of this Greater Yellowlegs on the wall from a screengrab of a video of the Black Skimmer. Elephants, peccaries, and corvids have all been documented processing the death of (as we put it) a loved one. A concrete wall halving one of the ponds was a popular rest spot for several birds.

Green Herons are So Smart

Night Moves

Video from the ranch’s infrared camera shows the nest swaying vigorously and one of the chicks waking up with the sort of logey and suspicious look that I myself associate with tectonic activity (or other peoples’ snoring) disturbing my sleep. The Osprey at my old haunt in Dunrovin, being higher up, got rocked even harder.
