Colorado saw a newsworthy painted lady incursion this fall; the closely related red admiral also migrates (it’s interesting to note that in Europe, the painted lady seems to be almost as well-known and well-documented a migrant as the monarch is in North America.) There has been a Little Owl living in this hollow branch for at least 3 years as documented in Simon’s Mote Park Blog and it is assumed to be the same individual though I am not sure whether it is a she or a he. Did I say British? They integrated well and have been warmly welcomed as part of the UK’s wild avifauna now.

The White-backed Woodpecker is the hardest resident woodpecker to find in Europe. Dendrocopos leucotos is absent from western Europe but is found in northern, central, and eastern Europe and across Asia as far east as Japan and Korea.
