Fairy Martins were busy nesting under the bridge and the water body and surrounds were home to Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stork, Australasian Grebe, Australasian Darter, Plumed Whistling-Ducks, White-faced Herons and Great Egret to name a few species. Feeding birds is generally regarded as a harmless past-time, a wholesome way for people to share nature and enjoy wildlife with the family. Granted, the law is written poorly, but the man was given several warnings and insisted on feeding birds on the ground and attracted huge flocks of ducks and no doubt raccoons at night.

There were surprisingly few ducks, but there are hundreds of Plumed Whistling-Ducks at the Broome Poo Ponds now. The only ducks we saw were Pacific Black Ducks, Grey Teal and Hardheads. The Purple Swamphens were hiding amongst the reed beds and could been seen occasionally as they flew across the reeds. Sacred Kingfisher.

At these places they are neither shy nor reed-dependent but can often be seen grazing on lawns like cows or swimming on open ponds no less visible than a rubber duck in a bath tub. Definitely my personal favorite of Africa’s pink birds is the delicate Pink-throated Twinspot. Its mostly found on the ground in thickets or the edges of dense vegetation and usually in small family parties. Better know as Cape Teal, this small, pale dabbling duck has a wide range across the more arid areas of subSaharan Africa.

In the meantime we were enjoying looks at waterfowl like Ruddy Ducks , Eared Grebes , and Redheads , as well as a couple of Lesser Scaup. If you ever get the chance to visit the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve you should definitely go for it. It looked pretty darn nice through the scope though! One lifer down and one to go.

Here in central Mexico, the winter season always seems to begin with the arrival of various members of the sandpiper family. Still, most of the birds were locals, including Fulvous Whistling-Ducks , Black-necked Stilts , and a lone American Avocet (still with a bit of breeding color). Definitely an adult.

This is a hefty book, 560 pages long and dimensions of 6.3 inches, which makes it just a little too large to be a field guide. The design focuses attention on the photographs.

We definitely didn’t need a television! A family group of eight Grey-crowned Babblers bounced around the surrounding trees and dropped to the water to drink. Having spent a few days in Sydney with my sister and family and doing the two long walks in the Royal National Park and Georges River National Park we headed south to stay at Mittagong in the Southern Highlands. A family of Black-necked Storks appeared to have recently bred in the area and had not quite fledged. Raptors were represented by Black Kites , Whistling Kites , Australian Hobby and White-bellied Sea-Eagle , but there was only one species of duck during our visit and that was the Hardhead. As one flies into Sydney’s airport it is clearly visible as a very definite boundary marking the edge of the city, but having seen it many times from the air it was one of those places that I just never managed to get to.
